HABE's Careers Fair is taking place on Friday 8th July to introduce our students to employers in order to inspire them in making the best decisions for their careers. We need guest speakers from industries such as retail, baking, hospitality, entertainment and Medicine.

They managed to complete 5 miles in an 1hr 45 in the heat and walked up the steepest of hills, but that did not stop the students. We have now raised £730 for Save the Children, and the Diversity Group members are over the moon with how their teamwork and hard work has paid off.

It was a great pleasure to be with you all - so impressive. As Lord Harris said, children only get one education so we need to make it as good as it can be. Thanks for all you do to make that a reality.

Meet our Head Boy and Head Girl

When looking back on this term, we both feel that it has been memorable for many different reasons. With the ongoing pandemic, it has been hard for us to implement all of the fun and exciting activities that we had in place due to the current restrictions. However that has not stopped us here at Harris Academy Beckenham. Life has been a little strange for everyone ever since we have come back from lockdown and we have all had to get used to the new normal of wearing face coverings to protect ourselves and the people around us. At first it was strange but we have eventually adapted to it.

Study for sixth form students has been very unpredictable with the new measures introduced to ensure that we do our best in the upcoming exams and that responsibility for our own learning has definitely been evident. For the younger students life has been the most unprecedented. Being the youngest and in their first year of secondary school in this current climate must be very scary and we are working very closely with them to make sure they have that extra support that they most definitely need.

Recently us Sixth form students have been attending a virtual work experience courses over the half term which has been very beneficial. Examples of these include activities put in place by the wonderful people over at Sky who introduced us to life inside the business sectors that we are most interested in. These activities varied throughout the week with webinars from professionals inside of those specific sectors,  providng us with a clear direction on which courses we may wish to follow.

Recently we have recently seen the departure of our Year 13 students and we wish them nothing but the best for their future lives. At the same time it is very scary seeing them leave as we know we will be in the same situation in less than a year but the only difference is that we actually have to sit our A-levels!

The teachers that work closely with our year groups have been sending us links to zoom webinars that help us understand the specification of our subjects and really enhance our knowledge. The masterclasses ranged from the sciences to maths. The idea of these is to help us to identify any misconceptions we may have and to fill any gaps in our knowledge we may have. We are extremely grateful to the members of staff across the Federation for putting these sessions on to help us.

Year 12 will shortly be embarking on the university/apprenticeship/careers adventure and this is where we will get the chance to discuss our future with some of the senior staff here at the Academy and really finalise where we want to take our lives and the paths we want to take. We are nervous but excited about the journey and can not wait to get started!

As the senior members of the Student Leadership Team, we have been instrumental in devising a plan to improve the student experience within the Academy. We are able to reflect on policy successes, whilst allowing students in the lower school to give their feedback with further suggestions. Recent  meetings involved conversations about changing the culture of the Academy and creating more communication between students and staff, with a real focus on rewarding positive behaviour.

We will endeavour to make every student as happy as possible by working with senior leaders and the student leadership team.

We wish you all a fantastic summer term and hope you enjoy the sunshine!

Marina and Tobias
