The Big Read
The Big Read is a programme which supports students' reading development whilst simultaneously providing them with the opportunity to engage with texts that provide insights the world around them.
Students listen to their teacher reading the text whilst following along in their own copy. As the text is read by the teacher for the majority of the Big Read session, students are exposed to complex topics and issues.
For instance, A Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time enables students to empathise with experiences of neuro-diverse individuals and prompts students to look at the world from a different perspective.
Another text, Out of the Shadows prompts students to consider the moral development of young people and experiences of racism. A Year 7 text, Wonder, explores the importance of compassion and acceptance.
Our Big Read programme aims to develop a love of literature and reading but the texts are carefully to chosen to help prepare students for the wider world.
